125mm & 180mm Grinding Wheels for Steel and Cast Iron

These 125mm (5-inch) and 180mm (7-inch) grinding wheels from FUJI's Super F2 series combine selected white and brown aluminum oxide abrasives with reinforced resin-bond formulations for general steel and cast iron grinding. They offer affordable performance for metal fabrication, weld cleanup and industrial maintenance.

The 125mm × 6mm option balances manageable handling with durability for medium-duty grinding. Choose the 180mm option for larger accessible surfaces and sustained heavy stock removal. This page covers general metal grinding formulations; the 125mm wheel here is distinct from FUJI's dedicated aluminum grinding wheel.

FUJI uses Japanese warm-press manufacturing technology and controlled production processes to support consistent wheel quality. Other diameters, including 100mm, 115mm and 150mm, are also available to match different equipment and production needs.

Selected Aluminum Oxide Abrasives & Japanese Warm-Press Technology

The Super F2 series uses selected white and brown aluminum oxide, also known as corundum abrasives, in formulations selected for the grinding task. Phenolic resin bonds the abrasive grains, while alkali-free fiberglass reinforcement supports wheel integrity.

  • Affordable performance: A practical abrasive solution for routine steel grinding, balancing purchase cost, wheel consumption and useful grinding performance.
  • Durability: Controlled resin-to-abrasive bonding supports grain retention and usable wheel life during metal removal.
  • Heat management: The warm-press process and wheel structure are designed to balance bonding, porosity and heat dissipation.
  • Grinding comfort: Controlled resilience supports a manageable grinding feel. Actual vibration and handling depend on the grinder, mounting, contact area and technique.
  • Consistent manufacturing: FUJI's own factory follows Japanese quality management standards with controlled materials and production processes.

Why FUJI Uses Warm-Press Technology

Temperature control adds another way to manage the resin-bond system during forming. The response depends on the resin and formulation: controlled warmth can influence binder flow and distribution around the abrasive grains. FUJI combines its warm-press process with selected materials and controlled curing to support consistent bonding and wheel structure.

The aim is balanced grinding performance, not simply maximum density or the hardest bond grade. The formulation must retain useful abrasive grains while allowing worn grains to release at an appropriate rate. FUJI's P-grade formulation is designed to combine this balance with porosity and resilience for heat management, self-sharpening action and a comfortable grinding feel.

125mm × 6mm: A Practical Middle Size

The 5-inch wheel suits users who need a step up from compact 100mm grinding without moving to a larger 180mm setup. For suitable tasks, its larger abrasive capacity can support longer use than a comparable 100mm wheel, while the 125mm format remains easier to maneuver than a 180mm setup. Actual wheel life depends on formulation, equipment and grinding conditions.

Typical work includes steel brackets, frames, welded assemblies, component edges and routine repairs. Choose it for medium-duty stock removal where both access and durability matter.

180mm: Long Time Heavy Grinding

The 7-inch option is suited to larger accessible steel surfaces, substantial welds and repeated production grinding. Select the thickness, grit size, bond grade and speed rating for the material and equipment. A larger wheel must only be used on a grinder designed for that diameter.

Grit Size, Bond Grade & Speed Selection

Grit size describes the size of the abrasive particles. A lower grit number indicates a coarser abrasive: 24 grit is coarser than 36 grit. Select the grit according to the amount of metal to remove and the required surface finish.

Hardness describes how firmly the bond holds the abrasive grains, not the hardness of the abrasive mineral itself. A harder bond grade retains grains more strongly, while a softer grade releases them more readily. A harder grade is not always better: the wheel needs to balance grain retention with the release of worn grains to maintain effective grinding.

FUJI's standard P-grade warm-pressed formulation is designed to balance grain retention and release with an open, resilient wheel structure. The combination of formulation and Japanese warm-press processing supports heat dissipation, self-sharpening action and a comfortable grinding feel. Porosity and resilience depend on the complete formulation and manufacturing process, not the bond-grade letter alone.

For the 180mm options, 36P combines 36-grit abrasive with a P bond grade, while 24S combines coarser 24-grit abrasive with a harder S bond grade. Choose according to the workpiece, grinder power, contact area and removal requirements rather than assuming the harder bond grade will always perform better.

Standard 72m/s and custom 80m/s versions are available for the 180mm option. Confirm the grade and speed rating for the selected 125mm or 180mm wheel, and follow the maximum RPM marked on its label.

Before ordering, confirm diameter, thickness, bore, grit size, hardness, maximum operating RPM. FUJI can assess formulation adjustments for your material and production requirements.

Industrial Applications

Compare the wheel size and grade with your actual task across these industrial applications.

Metal Fabrication & Welding

Use the 125mm option for medium-duty weld leveling, burr removal and edge preparation on steel assemblies. The 180mm option suits larger accessible welds and heavier removal. Where painting or coating requires a specified finish, follow grinding with the appropriate finishing and surface-preparation process.

Structural Steel & Maintenance

Choose 125mm for localized repairs and work around frames and brackets; consider 180mm for larger exposed surfaces and repeated heavy grinding. Equipment access and the amount of metal to remove are more useful selection criteria than diameter alone.

Foundries & Heavy Industry

Super F2 can be selected for suitable general cast iron grinding tasks. For demanding casting cleanup and sustained high-removal work, compare the 180mm Super Z zirconia grinding wheel with your current abrasive under the same production conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I choose 125mm instead of 180mm?

Choose 125mm for medium-duty grinding where manageable handling and access are important. Choose 180mm for larger accessible surfaces and sustained heavy stock removal, using a grinder approved for that wheel size.

How does the 125mm wheel compare with a 100mm wheel?

The 125mm format provides more abrasive capacity than a comparable 100mm wheel and is a practical choice for longer medium-duty tasks. The 100mm format remains useful for compact equipment and localized work. Compare wheel consumption and grinding time on the same task to establish the best option.

How should we select grit size and bond grade?

Start with the workpiece material, amount of stock to remove, grinder power and acceptable surface roughness. Grit size determines abrasive coarseness, while bond grade describes how firmly the bond retains the grains. Stronger retention is not always better: worn grains need to release at an appropriate rate to expose fresh cutting edges. Provide your existing specification and the performance issue you want to improve so FUJI can recommend samples.

Is this 125mm wheel the same as the aluminum grinding wheel?

No. This page covers general steel and cast iron grinding options. FUJI's 125mm aluminum grinding wheel uses a dedicated formulation for aluminum applications. Select by material and task, not diameter alone.

Can these wheels be used for cutting?

These are Type 27 depressed center grinding wheels. For cutting operations, select appropriate FUJI cut-off wheels and compatible equipment.

Does a harder bond grade always mean a longer-lasting wheel?

No. Strong grain retention can be useful, but retaining worn grains for too long can reduce cutting action and increase rubbing. The right bond grade balances grain retention and release for the material and equipment. FUJI uses formulation and warm-press process control together to target this balance, rather than relying on bond grade alone.

Selection & Safe Use

Match the diameter, thickness, bore and mounting arrangement to the grinder. Never exceed the maximum RPM marked on the wheel. Keep the correct guard fitted, use appropriate protective equipment and follow the wheel and grinder instructions. Inspect wheels before use and follow the supplied storage and service-life guidance.

Abrasive Wheel Selection & Technical Parameters Guide

Choosing the correct abrasive wheel is critical for both operational efficiency and JIS-compliant safety. Fuji Grinding Wheels are engineered with precise technical markings to ensure the perfect match for your specific material and machine requirements.

Understanding Fuji Markings (e.g., WA 36 P BF)

  • Abrasive Type (WA/A/AZ): Determines the suitability for material hardness (e.g., WA for hardened steel, AZ for heavy-duty alloys).
  • Grit Size (16 - 120): Indicates the coarseness. Lower numbers for rapid removal; higher numbers for precision finishing.
  • Hardness Grade (L - S): Defines the bond strength. Correct selection prevents premature wheel wear or surface glazing.
  • Bonding Agent (BF): High-grade Resinoid bond reinforced for high-speed safety and impact resistance.

💡 Expert Selection Tip

For professional export markets, always verify the Peripheral Speed (m/s) compatibility. Fuji wheels are designed to exceed JIS Burst Speed factors, but operating at the recommended R.P.M. ensures the longest tool life and cleanest cut.

Note: Mismatched grit or hardness can lead to excessive heat buildup, affecting the workpiece's structural integrity.

Global Maintenance Standard: To maintain the high safety factor of Fuji wheels, avoid exposure to excessive humidity and chemical solvents during storage. Proper care preserves the resinoid bond's strength, crucial for high-load industrial applications.

FUJI Industrial Quality & Safety Protocols

Fuji products are manufactured following strict Japanese standard process requirements. Every wheel is engineered to meet or exceed JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards), such as JIS R 6242 and B 4051. Our core engineering logic prioritizes maximum operator protection by maintaining safety factors and burst speed capabilities that often surpass the highest industry benchmarks.

Standard Region Safety Factor (Burst Multiplier) Safety Logic & Benchmark
FUJI (High Precision) > 2.0x Engineered to exceed JIS requirements for maximum reliability.
Japan (JIS R 6242) 2.0x Extreme Safety: A wheel rated at 80m/s must withstand a 160m/s burst test.
Europe (EN 12413) 1.73x Risk Balanced: Provides high safety redundancy for most industrial apps.
USA (ANSI B7.1) 1.5x Efficiency Focused: Relies on machine guarding and operational procedures.

⚠️ Essential Safety Cautions & Operational Integrity

  • 1. RPM Compliance: Never exceed the maximum R.P.M. specified on the wheel. Using the sides of the wheels for grinding is strictly prohibited, as it compromises the structural integrity of the abrasive bond.
  • 2. Mandatory Idling: Allow the tool to idle for one minute before beginning work. If a new wheel has been mounted, an idle run of three minutes is required to ensure dynamic stability.
  • 3. Workpiece Stability: All materials must be securely fastened. Improperly secured workpieces can lead to vibration, wheel binding, and unsafe kickback forces.
  • 4. Arbor Hole Integrity: Do not modify or enlarge the metal center of the arbor hole. A proper fit is critical; a mismatched arbor causes eccentric rotation and dangerous vibration levels.
  • 5. PPE Requirements: Industrial-grade face and eye protection are mandatory at all times. Ensure all protective gear meets local safety compliance standards.
  • 6. Guard Protection: Protection guards are designed to contain fragments in the unlikely event of a wheel failure. Never operate tools or machinery with guards removed.

Professional Export & Maintenance Insight

When deploying Fuji high-performance tools in overseas markets, ensure that the regional power grid frequency and voltage match the tool specifications. To maintain the superior burst speed safety of Fuji wheels, store abrasives in a dry, temperate environment. Humidity can degrade the resin bond, potentially lowering the wheel’s resistance to centrifugal forces.
